How much does a website cost? What drives the price.

"How much does a website cost?" has no single answer. For the same need, one agency may quote low and another several times more. To understand the gap, you need to know what goes into a quote. This guide covers the main items behind website pricing.

1. Template or custom design?

Sites built on a template are faster and cheaper, but hundreds of sites may share the same template, and it gets less flexible as it is bent to fit your brand. A custom design is built from scratch around your brand. This choice usually drives the biggest price difference.

2. Number of pages and structure

A one-page presentation site and a multi-page corporate site with service pages, references, blog and contact differ greatly in effort. Every new page template means more design, development and testing time.

3. CMS and custom features

If you want to update content yourself, you need an admin panel. These features also add cost:

  • Multiple languages.
  • Online sales, payments and shipping integration.
  • Booking, reservation or quote forms.
  • Memberships and user accounts.
  • Integrations with external systems (CRM, ERP, accounting).

4. Content and visual production

If copy, photos and videos are not ready, producing them is added to the project. Professional copywriting, product and team photos, a promo video or AI-generated visuals affect site quality the most, yet they are the most often forgotten items.

5. SEO and speed

A site with proper page titles, descriptions, sitemap, language tags, structured data and speed optimization performs far better on Google. Some quotes include these, some do not. Always ask when comparing.

6. Domain, hosting and maintenance

Domain and hosting are usually separate yearly costs. A monthly or yearly maintenance agreement for updates, backups, security and small edits after launch also adds to the total.

Questions to ask when comparing quotes

  • Is the design custom or a template?
  • Are mobile optimization and speed tests included?
  • Is basic SEO setup included?
  • Whose name will the domain and hosting be in?
  • How many revision rounds are included?
  • How do support and maintenance work after launch?
  • Will source files and access details be handed over?

Frequently asked questions

Why do corporate website prices vary so much?

Custom versus template design, page count, CMS, content production, SEO and maintenance are included in quotes to very different degrees. Comparing quotes item by item is the right approach.

What is the risk of a cheap website?

You may end up with a slow site that is hard to use on mobile, lacks SEO foundations, or whose domain and hosting you do not own. That can mean paying for a rebuild later.
