How to make an AI commercial.

Making an AI commercial is not about typing a prompt and downloading the result. A good film still comes from an idea, a script and an edit; AI simply removes most of the need for sets, locations and crews. This guide walks through how an AI commercial is produced, from brief to delivery.

What is an AI commercial?

An AI commercial is an ad film whose scenes are generated with AI video and image models instead of being shot on camera. Characters, locations, product shots and atmosphere are created with these models, then turned into a film the same way as a classic production: editing, color grading, voice-over and music.

This approach shines when you need:

  • Scenes that are expensive or impossible to shoot (space, historical settings, fantasy worlds).
  • Many versions of a campaign in a short time.
  • The same film adapted for different languages, markets and formats.
  • A fast way to test an idea before a launch.

1. Brief: define what the film must do

Everything starts with a good brief. AI produces fast, but if it does not know what to produce, it quickly produces the wrong thing. A brief should answer:

  • What does the film say, and what should the viewer do afterwards?
  • Who is the audience and where will it run (TV, YouTube, Instagram, in-store screens)?
  • Which lengths and formats are needed (15, 30, 60 seconds; 16:9, 9:16, 1:1)?
  • What are the brand colors, tone and things to avoid?
  • How must the product itself look on screen?

A clear brief speeds up every following step and cuts the number of revisions.

2. Concept and script

Next comes the core idea and the script, describing scene by scene what happens, what is said and which emotion is targeted. With AI production there is one extra question: can each scene actually be generated well? Long dialogue with close-up lip sync still needs care today, while short, visually driven scenes deliver much stronger results.

A good AI commercial script usually relies on short scenes, strong visual transitions and a clear closing message.

3. Storyboard and visual language

Once the script is approved, a frame is created for every scene. AI image generation is extremely useful here: you can see the palette, lighting, camera angles and characters before production starts.

The most important decision at this stage is consistency. The same character must keep the same face, outfit and lighting in every scene. Reference images, character sheets and fixed style definitions make that possible.

4. Generating the scenes

With the storyboard approved, the real production begins. Each scene is brought to life with video models using the approved frames as reference. It rarely works in one go: many takes are generated for each scene, the best are selected and flawed frames (broken hands, drifting logos, inconsistent backgrounds) are thrown out.

For scenes where the product must look right, real product photos are used as reference and every result is checked. Details like logos, packaging and text are fixed in post when needed.

5. Editing, color, sound and music

The film really comes to life in the edit. At this stage:

  • Scenes are cut and ordered to a rhythm.
  • Color grading gives every shot the same look.
  • Voice-over, music and sound effects are added.
  • Logo, tagline and supers are placed with motion design.

What makes an AI film look amateur is usually not the image but weak editing and sound. Professional post-production is the step that defines quality the most.

6. Delivery and platform versions

After approval, separate versions are exported for each platform: a 16:9 YouTube cut, 9:16 Reels and TikTok versions, a 1:1 feed version and 6 to 15 second cutdowns. Adaptations that might require a reshoot in a classic production are far more flexible with AI.

How long does it take and what drives cost?

It depends on scope, but for a 30-second film we typically plan 1 to 3 weeks from brief approval to delivery. The main cost drivers are:

  • Film length and number of scenes.
  • How many scenes require character and product consistency.
  • Voice-over, music and language versions.
  • How many formats and cutdowns are needed.

Common mistakes

  • Relying only on the tool: AI tools are available to everyone; the idea, script and edit make the difference.
  • Starting without a brief: A project that does not know what it wants turns into endless revisions.
  • Ignoring consistency: A character that changes in every scene breaks the viewer's trust.
  • Leaving sound for last: Music and voice-over shape the emotion as much as the picture.
  • Thinking in one format: Planning where the film will run from day one saves time later.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI commercial run on TV?

Yes. When delivered at the resolution and format required by the broadcaster, it can be used on TV and digital channels.

Will our real product look accurate in the film?

Yes, when your real product photos are used as reference. Packaging, logos and text are checked frame by frame and corrected in post when needed.

Will AI commercials replace traditional shoots?

Not for every project. Long dialogue performances by real people still favor a classic shoot. AI stands out where speed, variety of scenes and version flexibility matter. The two can also be combined.
