How to make a mobile game: from idea to app store.

Everyone has a game idea, but the road from idea to a playable game is often different from what people expect. This guide explains how a mobile or browser game is developed, the stages it goes through and how brands can use games.

1. Idea and core loop

The heart of a game is its core loop: the basic action the player repeats. Run, jump, collect; match, pop, score; fight, level up, advance. A good game idea fits in one sentence, and the loop should be fun within the first 30 seconds.

At this stage, answer:

  • Who is the player, and where and for how long will they play?
  • Will it be a mobile app or a game that opens in the browser?
  • How will it make money or what purpose will it serve (awareness, campaign, sales)?

2. Prototype: is it fun?

Before investing in art and menus, a playable prototype is built with simple shapes. The goal is to answer one question: is this fun? The idea can change, or even be dropped, at prototype stage. That is far cheaper than finding out at the end of development.

3. Game design and art direction

Once the prototype works, the rules, levels, difficulty curve and reward systems are designed. In parallel, characters, environments, interface and sound are created. The visual language must fit the audience and platform: readable characters on a small phone screen and big, easy-to-tap buttons are essential.

4. Development

The game is built with an engine like Unity or Godot, or with web technologies for browser games. Mechanics, level structure, save systems, leaderboards, ads and in-app purchases all come together here. Performance optimization so the game runs smoothly on many phones is a key part of this stage.

5. Testing

The game is played by real players outside the team. Where they struggle, get bored or quit is observed. Different screen sizes, older devices and slow connections are tested too.

6. Launch: App Store, Google Play or the web

For mobile apps, Apple App Store and Google Play developer accounts are set up, store images, descriptions and privacy details are prepared, and the game goes through store review. Browser games can go live directly on a domain; since nothing needs to be installed, they are very practical for campaigns and social sharing.

Games for brands: advergames

Games are not just for game companies. With prize games during campaigns, mini games that present a product in a playful way or games played on screens at events, brands can spend minutes with their audience. Compared to the few seconds of attention an ad gets, a game creates a much longer and more memorable touchpoint. Browser games, needing no install, are usually the fastest route for these campaigns.

What drives timeline and cost?

  • Game genre and the complexity of its mechanics.
  • Number of levels, characters and content.
  • Server features such as multiplayer, leaderboards and accounts.
  • Mobile app or browser game.
  • The update and content plan after launch.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a mobile game?

A simple hyper-casual or browser game can take a few weeks; a game rich in content and features can take several months. A prototype is the best way to clarify time and risk.

Browser game or mobile app?

Browser games suit campaigns, events and instant access; mobile apps suit long-term player bases and store visibility. Some games can be released both ways.

Can we commission a custom game for our brand?

Yes. Games designed around your brand's characters, products and campaign goals can be built and opened from your website or social media.
